How to Calculate Forex Pip Value
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price movement in forex — typically the fourth decimal place (0.0001) for most pairs, or the second decimal (0.01) for JPY pairs. This calculator tells you the exact dollar value of one pip for any currency pair at any lot size.
Enter the currency pair, your account currency, the lot size (standard, mini, or micro), and the current exchange rate. The calculator outputs the pip value in your account currency. This is essential for position sizing in forex — you can't calculate risk without knowing what a pip is worth.
Pip values change as exchange rates move, which is why many forex traders recalculate before every trade. A pip on EUR/USD at 1.10 is worth a different amount than at 1.05. This calculator handles the conversion automatically.
Formula
Pip Value = (Pip Size ÷ Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. Standard lot = 100,000 units. Mini lot = 10,000. Micro lot = 1,000.
Example
You're trading EUR/USD with a standard lot (100,000 units). EUR/USD is at 1.0850.
Pip size = 0.0001. Pip value = (0.0001 ÷ 1.0850) × 100,000 = $9.22 per pip in USD.
If your stop loss is 25 pips away, your risk per standard lot = 25 × $9.22 = $230.50. On a $10,000 account risking 2%, you can afford $200 in risk — so you'd use a mini lot (0.1 standard) instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pip in forex trading?
A pip is the fourth decimal place in most forex pairs (0.0001). For JPY pairs, it's the second decimal (0.01). One pip on EUR/USD at a standard lot is worth approximately $10. Pips are the standard unit for measuring price movement and calculating profit/loss in forex.
What is the difference between a pip and a pipette?
A pipette (or fractional pip) is one-tenth of a pip — the fifth decimal place. Some brokers quote prices in pipettes for tighter spreads. 10 pipettes = 1 pip. When calculating risk, always convert pipettes to pips first.
How much is a pip worth on a mini lot?
On EUR/USD, a mini lot (10,000 units) makes one pip worth approximately $1. A standard lot (100,000) is about $10 per pip. A micro lot (1,000) is about $0.10 per pip. The exact value depends on the exchange rate.
